Social Reporting for CCAFS Science Meeting, Mar 2013

Overview

This page is a working space to pull together ideas and responsibilities for Social Reporting at the CCAFS Science Meeting in Davis, California, 18-19 March 2013. This topic has been discussed on the Sandbox and this is an opportunity to synthesise and build on what's already been suggested. The table below starts to sketch out Audience, Channels, Ideas, and Responsibilities with plenty of room for adding more information and missing dimensions.

Synthesis of Sandbox Conversations

  • OP-ED TO APPEAR AT TIME OF THE MEETING

> Polish/finalize the last version of Patti's social learning narrative developed for the social learning animated video and submit it to the Guardian's Poverty Matters development blog, or SciDevNet, or, if we get no response from these specialized meda, Vanessa could post the opinion piece on the CCAFS website? > Question from Susan: > Who will do this? Vanessa will adapt, publish and disseminate the OpEd piece via the CCAFS blog and share with CCAFS network.

  • BLOGS / SOCIAL MEDIA REPORTING OF THE MEETING

> Need to check for any social media enthusiasts among participants at beginning of Science Meeting to converse with the outside world (those not at the meeting at the time of the meeting). > Question from Susan: > Who will do this? Vanessa can reach out to the CCAFS people who are active on social media (Andy Jarvis, Jacob Van Etten, Bruce Campbell) to see their interest in reporting or tweeting. > Susan will develop and post at least two articles on the ILRI News Blog at the time of the event, one based on an early version of the material worked up for the animated video (and not using material that will make up the op-ed [see above]), and another showcasing some of the examples of successful social learning from all the centers, including examples published by Patti and others in PNAS a few years ago, underscoring their common principles. > Question from Vanessa: > Do we already have web links to the different initiatives mentioned from all the centers? > Vanessa will do some social reporting and help document.

  • TWITTER

> Ewen and Vanessa will tweet some comments about the meeting as it goes on. Susan will retweet all tweets from the meeting on the ILRI Twitter and her personal Twitter accounts. (ELB) if enough volume, we could actually feature these tweets on: [http:moritz.stefaner.eu/projects/revisit/#/CanLII500/false| http:moritz.stefaner.eu/projects/revisit/#/CanLII500/false] > Questions from Susan: > Who else can we get to tweet and retweet to create a buzz? Could divide this tweeting up into different tweeters for different sessions. Good communicators I know of: Peter Ballantyne (retweeter)? Peter Casier (retweeter)? Wiebke Foerch? Christine Jost? Andy Jarvis? Polly Ericksen? Anne Waters-Bayer? Mariana Rufino? Constance Neely?Vanessa can also tweet from my personal account @meaduva and @cgiarclimate. Andy Jarvis, Jacob van Etten and a few others are also on twitter.//

  • What will be the hashtag for this meeting? 2013CCSL. Vanessa: OK by me.
  • ANIMATED VIDEO

> How can we / should we promote the 5-minute CCSL animated video? Ewen suggests a 'stealth bomb' approach.

  • SANDBOX INTERACTIONS

> Idea for interactions with the Sandbox group during the Science Meetings: > Ewen will post to Sandbox (Yammer) and will invite @Carl Jackson, @Pete Cranston, @Wiebke Foerch, @philip thornton, @Patti Kristjanson etc. to do so, too.

  • CCAFS WEBSITE

> CCAFS can't put any Burness resources into getting the op-ed finalized and published but could do a couple of stories on the CCAFS blog that complement what others are planning to write. > Question for Vanessa from Susan: > Will you be able to create a landing page for this meeting, where readers will find all the links to the materials produced for it and generated by it? YES

  • MATERIALS

> We'll want our social reporting to link to the rich set of materials being produced, e.g.: > 01 Patti's animated video > 02 Patti and Ewen's agricultures blog article last Dec > 03 Liz's booklet > 04 Julian's CGIAR social learning stock-taking > 05 Blaine's Social Learning for Climate Adaptation > 06 material generated by the Penang meeting attended by Boru > 07 any material generated by the CCAFS donor meeting in UK on 4 Mar > 08 announcement of the Prolinnova agriculture innovations week in Nairobi in May. also see [http:paepard.blogspot.be/2012/10/prolinnova-and-ccafs-linking-knowledge.html| http:paepard.blogspot.be/2012/10/prolinnova-and-ccafs-linking-knowledge.html ] > 09 Carl's list of successful SL projects > 10 Policy brief by Wiebke and Liz that Peter will produce in ILRI's policy brief series > 11 CCAFS working paper 22: Climate change communication and social learning - Review and strategy development for CCAFS > Question from Susan: > Anything missing from this list?

  • SOCIAL COMMS REPORTING ORCHESTRA LEADER

> Question from Susan: > Who will play the role of orchestra leader to coordinate all the various reporting and online news about the event? (ELB) Would be great if Vanessa or someone from the participants' group would agree to do this. Carl and Ewen will be very busy and likely not able to follow this closely, let alone coordinate it. Vanessa: I am happy to do it.

  • MEETING DISCUSSIONS

> None of the sessions of the meeting will be 'live' online, so no one not participating in the meeting physically will be able to blog about the on-going discussions in real time.

  • AIM / AUDIENCE

> What do we want to achieve in the event? Who are we trying to reach? (ELB) I think we are trying to get interesting insights out for our respective networks of interest + get the sandbox group engaged with the discussions that come out. (ELB) Somehow we are also trying to engage the wider CGIAR too but it's not clear to me (Ewen) how to best do this - certainly all the people that work in similar processes as we are talking about on the CCSL sandbox might be interested in some of this work. (ELB) I prefer to think of this as a slow-building movement than a big-bang external dissemination group which raises expectations dramatically when we know there is a lot of skepticism around.

  • FOR FURTHER INFORMATION/INVOLVEMENT

> Question from Susan: > What do we tell people interested to join this conversation/get further information? Do we copy the message in Liz's booklet? > Question from Susan for Julian: > Could you provide the names and contacts of the key people involved in the social learning successes that you compiled in your stock-taking exercise? If so, I could forward some blog articles about the meeting and its materials to them and encourage their involvement that way.
