About the Framework and Toolkit:
The Climate Change and Social Learning (CCSL) Framework and Toolkit is an evolving compilation of social learning guidance and resources. We have two aims for this tool:
- to help practitioners design research initiatives that will achieve transformational change in the arena of climate change adaptation, and
- to build an evidence base around social learning methodologies.

Who it's for:
The CCSL Framework and Toolkit is a tool for anyone wanting to learn more about social learning and how to do it properly. Primarily it is targeted at researchers and project/program organizers who are--or wish to start--exploring the potential of the social learning approach in their initiatives or want to strengthen their current approach to social learning.
What it's for:
The Framework and Toolkit can help you achieve three things:
- Determine whether social learning is relevant and useful for your/your organization's initiative;
- Explore different methodologies and the contexts in which they have been shown to have a positive impact;
- Implement a social learning approach in your initiative, including monitoring, evaluation, sharing results and reflecting on the next iteration.
How to use it:
This framework and toolkit is not intended to be a prescriptive step-by-step “how-to” for social learning. Social learning is by definition an iterative, non-linear and sometimes very messy process. Thus, while some sections may appear to map easily onto stages in the standard project cycle, most cover activities that should be done throughout a project. Communication, monitoring, evaluation and adjustment must be done continuously within a project cycle in order to achieve genuine social learning.
Getting started:
The guidance and resources we have created and collected are organized into the 6 sections below. We recommend starting with the first section, "Taking Stock: Baseline self assessment", especially if you are new to social learning. This section contains resources that will help you understand what social learning is. You may also wish to select a section based on you wish to learn more about.
